Building a Nighttime Routine That Works for Eczema-Prone Skin
Small habits that may help you get more comfortable before bed.
6 minute read
It doesn't have to be complicated.
When we published our first Skin Note about why eczema often feels worse at night, one question naturally followed.
"Is there anything I can do before bed that might help?"
It's a fair question.
While there isn't one perfect nighttime routine that works for everyone, there are small habits that many people living with eczema have found helpful over time.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's consistency.
Because understanding your skin often begins with paying attention to the little things.
Why routines matter
Our skin responds to patterns.
The products we use.
The temperature of the room.
How we shower.
What we wear.
Even our stress levels.
Having a consistent evening routine doesn't guarantee a perfect night's sleep, but it gives your skin the same opportunity to recover each evening.
And over time, it becomes easier to notice what's helping—and what isn't.
1. Skip the hot shower.
After a long day, a hot shower can feel amazing.
But very hot water may strip away natural oils that help support your skin barrier.
Instead, try using lukewarm water.
Your skin will likely thank you afterward.
2. Moisturize while your skin is still slightly damp.
One of the simplest habits is also one of the most overlooked.
After bathing, gently pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it.
Then apply your moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp.
This helps lock in moisture before your skin has a chance to dry out completely.
3. Keep your bedroom cool.
Many people living with eczema notice that overheating can make itching feel more noticeable.
You don't need a cold room.
Just a comfortable one.
Sometimes a lighter blanket or lowering the room temperature by a few degrees can make a difference.
4. Choose clothing your skin likes.
Soft, breathable fabrics are often more comfortable than rough or tight-fitting materials.
Every person's skin is different.
The goal isn't following someone else's routine.
It's discovering what your own skin responds to best.
5. Give yourself a few quiet minutes.
A nighttime routine isn't only about skincare.
It's also about slowing down.
Reading a book.
Listening to calming music.
Stretching.
Taking a few deep breaths.
Stress doesn't cause every eczema flare, but many people notice that calmer evenings often lead to calmer nights.
What we've learned
One thing we've noticed from talking with people in our community is that no one remembers one magical product that changed everything overnight.
Instead, they remember small habits.
The moisturizer they never skip.
The cooler bedroom.
The cotton pajamas.
The routine they slowly built over months of paying attention to their own skin.
Sometimes progress isn't dramatic.
Sometimes it's simply waking up after a better night's sleep.

🌿 One Note to Remember
Consistency usually matters more than perfection.
Your nighttime routine doesn't have to be complicated.
The routine you can follow every evening is often more valuable than the perfect routine you only follow once in a while.
Understanding your skin, one note at a time.
